Math/Science
At CSS, we embed mathematics and science in meaningful contexts that help students develop a
deep understanding of important concepts and the connections between them. Mathematical and
scientific reasoning are central to our program, and students develop a high standard of quality for
the evidence they gather to justify their methods and conclusions. In doing so, we also ensure that
they develop a sound understanding of basic knowledge and skills. Because the contexts of each
inquiry make new understandings necessary, students develop not only a deeper understanding of
the concepts, but also of how those concepts are useful and how they are related. Wherever possible,
we try to honor the natural connections among the disciplines.
Some of the questions we've explored in Math/Science include:
- Is Earth the center of the universe?
- Why do we need a new calendar every year?
- Can you reduce a cake recipe so that it makes one cup of batter and still tastes right?
- How can I design a mousetrap-powered car that will travel the greatest distance?
