Visual and Performing Arts
Art
CSS art classes offer students a wide range of traditional applications including drawing, painting,
sculpture, two and three-dimensional work, clay (wheel and table) and art history (Canadian and
international). CSS students work with graphite, shading stumps, paint, papier-mache and many other
mediums when they create. Making the most of our technological resources, our students also develop
animation, live action and stop action projects.
Drama
Drama at CSS takes many forms that parallel the Alberta Elementary and Junior High Drama
Curriculum through classroom projects and extra-curricular activities. Teaching teams collaborate to
create unique learning opportunities including the Grade 8 Brazil project and Grade 7 Bunraku puppetry
performance. Drama is a big extra-curricular force at CSS. Before the winter break, we welcome
Theatre Prospero from Edmonton. They bring to life a selected Shakespeare play with the help of
CSS students. After the break, students rehearse for the CSS musical. Almost 70 students were
involved in the 2006 musical, including all grade levels. The commitment is huge, with almost three
months of rehearsals culminating in two weeks of dress, technical rehearsals and performances.
Music
At CSS, music is seen as an important part of a student’s education. The music program extends
from Grade 4–9 with regular music classes in Grades 4–8 and optional music electives offered in
Grades 6–9. Students are taught a general music program incorporating inquiry-based learning.
Music making is an integral part of the music program. Students are offered opportunities to use
cutting edge music technology. MIDI piano keyboards, guitars, hand-bells and percussive instruments
are provided to help them explore their musical abilities.
