Donna Alden
Teacher - Librarian
Donna has B. Ed Degree from the University of Lethbridge. Following teaching positions in junior high humanities in rural Alberta, and five years as a grade two teacher, she took time to raise her two sons, and orchestrate a family move to St. Albert. There, she completed a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta, and then taught grade 8 humanities for Edmonton Public Schools, before moving to Calgary. Donna was employed for 10 years by CBE as a teacher- librarian and curriculum leader of teaching and learning, before she accepted the position of teacher-librarian at CSS. Here, she teaches collaboratively with teachers, and manages the collection and services of the Anne Tingle Library.
Kathy Babiuk
Receptionist
Kathy has been the Receptionist at CSS for 8 years, and loves being a part of the “Office Dream Team”. The most important thing she’s learned while working here: “Band -Aids and Ice Packs will cure 99% of all problems!”
Kathy was born in Calgary (too many years ago!) and has lived and worked here the majority of her life. She is proud to be the great-grand-daughter of Calgary’s first settlers, Sam & Jane Livingston. She is married to Ken & has 3 grown daughters; Kelly-Ann, Laurel & Michelle She has also enjoyed hosting 14 foreign exchange students: from Japan, France, Mexico, Brazil, Ukraine, and New Zealand. One of the New Zealand students she hosted in 2002, Jason, became her son-in-law in 2009. She has also maintained a very close relationship with Pedro from Brazil. Having all of these extra ‘children’ has instilled a love for learning new languages, an interest in traveling and learning about other cultures, and a willingness to try new things. In her spare time you may find her curled up with a good book, or on the Internet planning her next trip, or best of all spending time with her family.
Krista Brenner
Accounting Specialist
Krista graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in accounting in 1993.
In January of 1994 she relocated to the Turks & Caicos Islands for approximately 10 years. She and her husband enjoyed the warm weather, golf and beaches. In the Turks & Caicos Krista spent the first five years in the accounting department at an island resort and, after completing her Canadian Securities courses and training, she spent the next five years working as a trader at RBC Dominion Securities.
Krista returned to Calgary in 2003 with her family.
In 2006 she began with the Calgary Science School in the accounting department working on various projects. Krista enjoys the atmosphere at the School and has moved towards more of a regular accounting-based role.
Erin Couillard
PD and Collaboration Coordinator
Erin holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Education degree from Queens University. She began her teaching career with Foothills School Division teaching grade 5, and moved to Calgary Science School in 2008. While at CSS, Erin has been teaching grade 6 and 7 Math/Science as well as the Environmental and Outdoor Education Elective. Erin is passionate about exposing students to the outdoors and helping them become contributing members of their community. She enjoys gardening in her community garden plot, practicing yoga, singing in a local choir and spending time with friends and family.
Michelle Hodgson
Library Assistant
Michelle has worked with CSS in the past as a school assistant and outdoor education program coordinator, and now we welcome her experience and talents in our library. She is pursuing certification as a library assistant and has worked in that capacity in a Calgary school for the past 3 years. With Michelle joining our team again our library will be fully staffed on all instructional Days.
Susan Miller
Office Assistant
Susan joined the school staff in 2006 and happily became part of “The Dream Team” in the office. Before that she enjoyed volunteering in the school’s library and helping on some of the field trips. She has a wonderful family –children Robert (a former CSS student!) and Christine and husband Al – and they all love hiking and skiing in the mountains, reading books, going to plays and trying lots of new recipes.
Shannon Mitchell-Flek
Student Services & Counselling
Shannon Mitchell-Flek is the school counselor and student services coordinator at the Calgary Science School. Shannon received her BEd in Elementary/Special Education from the University of Alberta and her MA in Counseling Psychology from Yorkville University. Prior to CSS, Shannon has taught with the Calgary Board of Education and worked as a counselor with the Calgary YWCA at the Sheriff King Home. Shannon enjoys working with staff, students and parents at CSS to assist with the every day (and not so every day) developmental, academic and social-emotional challenges that occur throughout childhood and adolescence. Shannon is also a registered provisional psychologist and working towards her hours to become a registered psychologist with a focus on counselling and educational/school psychology.
Myra Penberthy
Secretary Treasurer, Director
Myra accepted the role of Secretary Treasurer in January 2007 for the Calgary Science School. Prior to that she worked at the Canadian Red Cross as the Manager of Budgeting and Financial Reporting and as Woodlands Accountant in the lumber industry. Myra is a Certified Management Accountant designated in 1992. She also received her certificate in Production Accounting from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accountants in 2007. Myra considers herself to be very fortunate to be working at CSS with all the wonderful students, parents, board of directors and staff. In her free time she enjoys hiking, biking, downhill skiing and working out. She is married with one daughter and came to us via BC and the NWT.
Scott Petronech
Assistant Principal & Educational Technologist
Scott previously worked for the Science Alberta Foundation where he developed and presented Science and Technology integration workshops to teachers throughout the province. He has a B.Sc. in Biology and a B.Ed. Scott has worked at CSS since the school’s inception. He began as a Math/Science teacher and is now the Educational Technologist, overseeing all of the technology and infrastructure at the school. Scott initiated and manages the school’s 1:1 laptop project. He works with students and staff to ensure that technology is effectively integrated in the classroom. He is also an Apple Distinguished Educator and an Apple Professional Development trainer. Scott presents numerous workshops to teachers throughout the province each year.
