Deirdre Bailey

Deirdre began her teaching career at CSS, teaching physical education in the 2010-2011 school year. Her kinesiology background allowed her to step seamlessly into a grade four math and science classroom for the 2011-2012 school year. She is passionate about health, wellness, and getting into the out of doors.
Valerie Barnes
Math/Science Teacher
Grade 5, Classes 5.3 & 5.4
Valerie has a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology/Psychology, a Master’s in Environmental Science, and a Master of Teaching Program Degree. She is a life-long learner, participating in varied learning opportunities professionally and personally. At CSS since 2003, she integrates her educational experiences and personal interests into her practice. The natural environment is significant to Valerie, integral to who she is as person. This is incorporated into her teaching and volunteer work, where she uses natural history to cultivate an awareness, understanding, appreciation, and sense of stewardship for the natural world. Valerie feels there is a deep level of learning and understanding achieved through an interdisciplinary approach that combines instruction, inquiry, active student participation, hands-on learning, discoveries, and insights.
John Cadman
Math/Science
Grade 7, Classes 7.3 & 7.4
John Cadman graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education degree, elementary education major, after having completed a BA in History. He has been working with CSS in a number of capacities, most notably being the on-site coordinator for the Fort Steele Apprenticeship Program. He has a love of the outdoors and thoroughly enjoys passing along that passion to his students.
Louis Cheng
Math/Science Teacher
Grade 8, Classes 8.3 & 8.4
Louis Cheng has been teaching at Calgary Science School since the 2008/2009 school year. He has taught Grade Four Math and Science Classes since his arrival to the school. In addition to his teaching duties, he has coached the Calgary Science School 2008 Senior Boys Volleyball Team, the Calgary Science School 2008 Senior Girls Basketball team, and, the Calgary Science School 2009 Senior Boys Volleyball Team. Louis has been the driving force for bringing Science Communication Club to the school, and has hosted 4 cohorts of students in 3 years of this club to date. Louis Graduated with his Bachelors of Science degree and his Bachelors of Education degree. In his personal time, Louis enjoys both indoor and outdoor activities.
Jon Hoyt-Hallet
Math/Science Teacher
Grade 9, Classes 9.3 & 9.4
Jon Hoyt-Hallett has a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biochemistry from the University of New Brunswick and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. He has been teaching at the Calgary Science School since 2004, prior to this he worked in a research and quality control laboratory. He has a passion for science and outdoor education which helps take student learning outside the classroom and into real world settings.
Garett Kutcher
Math/Science Teacher
Grade 9, Classes 9.1 & 9.2
Born in the Crowsnest Pass, Garett obtained a BSc. in cell biology and genetics from UBC. He then spent three years teaching English in a small town in Japan before returning and getting his BEd. from the University of Calgary. Starting his career at the Kehewin Cree First Nation, Garett is now in is fifth year of teaching and his second full year at CSS. When not teaching, he volunteers for the Western Sky Land Trust and the Calgary Young Offender Centre as well as being an avid game designer and writer [he refuses to be called an author].
Greg Neil
Math/Science Teacher
Grade 5, Classes 5.1 & 5.2
Greg Neil, the proud father of three young children, graduated in 1999 from Carleton Universtiy in Ottawa with a degree in Environmental Science. Shortly after graduating, Greg moved to Western Canada and spent several years working in the areas of Wilderness Recreation and Outdoor Education prior to completing a diploma in Multimedia Design. In 2005, Greg returned to the University of Calgary to pursue his Education degree. Greg began his teaching career at Banded Peak in 2007, but moved to the Science School in the fall of 2007 and has been with the school ever since. When not in the classroom, Greg can usually be found camping, ski touring, mountain biking, mountaineering, or just spending quality time with his family.
Lisa Nelson
Math/Science Teacher
Grade 7, Classes 7.1 & 7.2
Lisa’s passion for teaching math and science comes from her love of both subjects. She has taught in schools in two other school divisions, and has experience in junior high and high school. She came to CSS in the 2007-2008 school year and has thrived ever since. When not in the classroom, Lisa can be found spending time with her husband and her daughter.
